President Cyril Ramaphosa says he agrees that the national minimum wage of 20 rand an hour is low.
Ramaphosa was speaking at a ceremony with stakeholders in Kliptown, Soweto, where he announced that the national minimum wage will be effective from the 1st of January next year.
This occasion acknowledges the contributions made by representatives of government, business, labour and community, under the auspices of the National Economic Development and Labour Council.
This rate is subject to future adjustments in terms of the National Minimum Wage Act.
Ramaphosa says this is not a living wage, but it is a start.
