On the 05th of December 2016, whilst the nation was remembering the day that the freedom Icon, our first ever elected Democratic President, the late Dr Rolihlahla Nelson Mandela’s passing, the music industry was taken aback by the sudden passing of the Gospel icon, Sfiso Ncwane, the “Kulungile Baba” hitmaker. Sfiso answered the final call to his eternal home on Monday at 09:30 in his hospital bed, in Johannesburg. The music industry at large is reeling at this loss.
An independent record label owner (Sfiso Ncwane Productions), he was a proud member of the Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) and had made serious and progressive strides in the Gospel industry, impacting not only the Gospel music lovers, but all music lovers in the country and across the borders.
In 2011 he released, under his record company, the hit song ‘Kulungile Baba” which saw him break the stereotypes at the SAMA 19 awards (2013), topping all other music genre’s and making history by clinching the Record of the Year award. In 2015, his album Bayede Baba saw him walk away with the Best Traditional Faith Album at the SAMA 21 music awards. In 2016, his album Bayede Baba saw him win 3 SAMA 22 awards namely: Best Selling Digital Download Composers Award, Best Selling Music Download of the Year and Best Selling Music Download – Ring-Back-Tone
It is indeed with a heavy heart that the music industry has lost yet another star, an icon, a true and dedicated artist who loved his craft till the end. His music will continue to live in the hearts of all South Africans and across the borders. We are thankful for his contribution to the industry and believe that through his musical journey, he has laid a solid foundation for generations to follow.
The Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) would like to send its message of condolences to his wife Ayanda, his children, family, fans and the entire music industry on his passing. May his soulful soul rest in eternal peace.
